You should have posted the rest of that quote. Emerson (only 1 'M') was a very religious man, paralleling God and Nature and how God reveals himself THROUGH nature. He believe ALL things were connected to God (and he was considered a religious radical). Reading your quote it almost appears like you're suggesting Emerson thought religion was ridiculous and only lower cultures believe in it. :)
